When I think of Jesus ministry and the beginnings of his impact on the world, I think of the Beatitudes. The practices of his followers become the fruit of the Christ Follower’s Life – this is the Church that was built on the site. It is a beautiful amphitheater like hillside where Jesus could speak to a crowd from the shore or a boat and cast a vision instead of a net. Faith built not on accomplishments and law but on love that flows out of a forgiven life and touching lives all over the earth. Read them…
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward…..
We are blessed in the living out of these actions – these fruits. Not everyone is called to everything but some of you are called to a mission. It is not to put that mission upon the shoulders of others but for you to do it. You to find fellow disiciples to carry it out – to live it out. This is not a new “Law” but a life that flows from a relationship with Jesus.

Herod the great was a show off for his Roman Sponsors. He wasn’t great because he was a great man or great leader but instead he was Herod the “Great Builder.” In Caesarea he built a port, a palace, and a playground for himself and his Roman bosses. He even built a twelve mile aqueduct to bring fresh water to fill his pool (next to the Mediterranean – which evidently wasn’t good enough) and supply the city with fresh water from the nearby mountain. Luxury and self absorption seemed to go hand in hand. Even Pontius Pilate lived here to escape the problems in Jerusalem. Now it all lies in ruins, a reminder that civilizations come and go and morph into other things. The Muslims, the Egyptians, the Crusaders, the Muslims again, the Israelies now control this city between Tel Aviv and Haifa. Now we travel in relative peace and tranquility. Go see it if you can. These ancient sites like all things ancient fade over time. The bible reminds us, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90
Be well and Shabbat Shalom…

Not Just the High and Mighty
As the early days of the Jesus movement were unfolding many things were happening to convince people about Jesus as the “One.” In Acts chapter nine there is the raising of Tabitha, a woman who cared for the poor, and the gossip about Saul of Tarsus changing sides, and then there is that little aside in Acts 9:43, “And Peter stayed a long time in Joppa, living with Simon, a tanner of hides.” It may very well have been that Peter was a well healed commercial fisherman but he did not mind associating with a “tanner of hides.” I take it that Simon the tanner may have been a shoemaker. So be it. The Gospel was for everyone. And there just a short walk from Lydda in Joppa (or Joffa) was Simon’s home as you can picture it in the photo above. This new world order continues to break into our lives when we learn to embrace everyone with the love of Christ. No matter our rank or status God’s love is everywhere and for everyone. That love heals, forgives, and comforts every day – hearts are changed and the world is better because of it. Peter befriended me that day too.

What Moves Me
As I stood on the beech at Tel Aviv this mid-February I could hardly imagine that I was here. A city that two decades ago was not nearly as spectacular and beautiful. Tel Aviv is a city near the historic Joppa which was part of the Biblical narrative that I know so well. It is a resort and business hub for Israel and it is where I arrived with colleagues from all over the US to experience this holy land. Did I ever think I would get here? It was a hope and a dream but thanks to Scott McAlpine and others who supported my nomination through Knights Templar I could now feel the cool salt seasoned breeze of the Mediterranean Sea. I sent this picture to a friend who said that it did not even look like it was from this world – and in a way it wasn’t. I was on an eternal journey to visit in the footsteps of Jesus of Nazareth and prophets, kings, and potentates of old. What an honor and what an adeventure that was about to begin. I wanted to just feel this moment. I did not want to think much about what was next – just feel and sense what was taking place. Soon I’d be back at the hotel ready for sleep and the adventure continued.
